During the Reconstruction Era, we saw many changes to the political landscape. Why do you think corruption was so widespread during this time? Do you think the election of 1876 changed things politically for Americans? Why or why not? What do you think politics in America will be like for the next 40 years (meaning from 1880-1920) or so?

Since there was a weak government, corruption was very widespread at this time in history. When Rutherford became president, the government changed. He was a good president and helped America get back on its feet. I believe politics in America from 1880-1920 became less corupt throughout those 40 years, but when the Great Depression started, government was really struggling to make decisions on how to raise our economy.

When Ulysses Grant took office, many people used his power of presidency to get power or money. This led to the people that Grant loaned money or power too to corrupt people that they didnt like. The whole thing ended in a bad way for both sides. Yes i think the election helped America get a better political system. I think that because Rutherford was a good president and everyone respected him and liked him, that just led the way for people listening to him on what needed to be done and changed. Either politics will become better or worse. It depends on who the major players are in the political system that make an impact. I believe it could go either way basing it off of how lately the political system has gone back and forth from being terrible to being good.

I think that there was so much corruption during this time because everything was spiraling out of control. Lincoln had just been assassinated and so Johnson the vice president then became president. Johnson wanted to quickly restore the union and to restore the political status of the south as quickly as possible. Once Grant became president everything was even more corrupt because he wasn't making any of the decisions on his own. People in his cabinet were more worried about money and power then the well being of the Union. Once the election of 1876 happened you finally had two good candidates running for office. Once Rutherford became president he was able to get everything back on track. From then on you had fairly good presidential candidates that were not as corrupt as both Grant and Johnson were.

The corruption was widespread because it affected America nation wide involving railroads and oil refining. It was so widespread because the leaders of our country felt at competition with each other, therefore they took reconstruction to a whole other level. Our country was at a low especially after the assasination of Lincoln, and the economic downfall that they suffered. The idea of Reconstruction was almost unthinkable at this point due to the damage that had already been done. Fortunately after all of these negative happenings, our country had a chance of being brought out of a rut due to the new election of a Rutherford Hayes. After the election, Hayes was able to bring our country back up to where it had begun. This just goes to show how much a leader can affect our country. A great country can easily be the outcome of a great leader.

I believe corruption was so widespread, because we had just finished a civil war. Our country was adding the Confederate states back into the U.S., and we had gained new leadership after the assassination of Lincoln. I do believe the election of 1876 changed America. This election, won by Rutherford Hayes, helped bring Southerners back into politics. Southerners gained powerful seats in government and subsidies to further their economy. I believe politics will pretty much always be the same, and that is a struggle for power. From the time before the Civil War and now, each party has fought for power, and this always leads to fighting or a new party formed. But, even though America has these struggles and fights, it is still a great nation and I'm proud to be a part of it.

It was very widespread because many people lost everything such as their land and money and people took advantage of this because people needed money railroad promoters, business speculators, land contractors, and stock market investors all tried to purchase their share of influence with elected leaders. Yes, it changed the political landscape there was widespread voter fraud and it forced congress to set up an electoral commission to determine the winner! During this time period there was a large amount of immigrants coming to America, America was becoming from a rural society to an industrial economy. Because of this organization of big businesses it will lead to more government reform, but still a lot of corruption because of powerful companies!

One of the reasons that the government was so corrupt was because the things had happen to Lincoln and the way Hayes had promised the money and land to his voters another reason was that when the Black people got the 15th amendment it's changed alot because of all their votes but even with that the one state had a say so was Georgia because in the clinch they were the votes that counted and this changed our government because the 15th amendment had alot to do with the way I government is now. I think that the politics from 1880 to 1920 will still have some corruption In them because that's the way politics have always been and always will be but this did help our government in straightening out things and it will show in the later years with the decision that our government and president makes but also the people now will have a huge say in the coming years that's what I think will happen

The corruption was so widespread because we had just gotten out of the Civil War and times were bad and because of our governmeant and leaders of our country. I think the Election of 1876 was good for America because they had two good guys running for office oppose to two bad guys and thats why the 76 election was so close. Hayes was a really good guy with good morals. I think Politics in America will all depend on who is in office and if its a good or bad president so it could get worse or better.

There were many factors that would contribute to the U.S. government being as corrupt as it was. One of the major ones being the Civil War just coming to an end. Our country adding back the southern states after they had just succeeded a few years previous had to have been chaotic, and just asking for corruption to find its way into the U.S. government. There is no doubt the election of 1876 changed America. This election allowed the southerners a gateway back into politics. Haynes being the leader he was got things going again for the U.S. The next forty years might not have been all smooth sailing, but America excelled and has grown into the great nation it is today.

Corruption was widespread because of the people we had leading the country and because of the civil war and racism. The election of 1876 changed America because it helped bring southerners back into politics so it wasn't so one-sided. The next forty years was tough on the country.

Corruption was so wide spread during this time because the country just got out of the Civil war. After the civil war the current president, Abraham Lincoln, was assasinated. During this time people thought that the government was going down hill. The Election on 1876 was important because it allowed for better leaders to be in office. Tilden won the election by just a couple of votes. I think the politics for the next years will be based on who they have in the office. If they have good and smart leaders in the office the United States will continue to advance and grow.

The corruption was widespread because, in the south the economy was destroyed by the civil war. Yes, because Hayes and Tilden were both against corruption, and were trying to rebuild our economy from scratch. yes i believe it will change a lot because of immigration during 1880 - 1920, 15% of americas population during this time was made up of immigrants.

I think corruption was widespread because the economy was bad and it was a way to make money. I do think that the election of 1876 will change things because both of the candidates were not corrupt. I think politics would change for the good over the next 40 years.
