Abraham Lincoln was very conflicted when he issued the Emancipation Proclamation. What do you think of the timing of this policy change? Did the President make the right decision? Why or why not? What immediate and long-term effects did his decision have on the war?

I would say Lincoln choose to issue the Emancipation Proclamation too early. I feel that if he would have waited 2 or 3 years then everyone who was inspired to join the civil war because of the proclamation would have made it through the war and not have lost their life. But since he gave the speech 1 year into the war; getting all the northerners wanting to go fight, and stop slavery. Considering that most of the northerners who went to go fight after the Emancipation Proclamation were black. Lincoln also made it impossible for the South to want to sign a treaty and end the war early. The South disagreed to the Proclamation, making them angry, wanting to go fight, and keep slavery. I would say one of the long term effects it had on the war was that Lincoln made the Civil War, for Northerners, about slavery. It made 200,000 blacks join the Union and fight the Civil War; about 40,000 of them lost their lives. The Civil War could have ended sooner if he had not made the Emancipation Proclamation, because the south refused to sign any treaty after Lincoln announced this.

i believe his timing was right. i believe he didn't bring up the issue of slavery at the time in order to keep peace between the Union. In my opinion, Lincoln made the right decision, because he had the border states of Washington D.C. on his side, and he could've lost these states if he had issued the Emancipation Proclamation sooner. The Emancipation Proclamation made the Confederates angry, and this anger fired them up to keep fighting and win the war. With the Confederates angry, the war kept going without a peace signing. A long term effect I found was the major loss of life. Because the war kept going without a peace treaty, more people lost their life.

I feel like Abraham Lincolns timing was on point during the war because it freed most of the slaves in the U.S and they could enroll in the U.S. army forces. It basically made ending slavery the war goal. I feel like his decision was right it helped to keep the Union together, energized the army and helped bring a quicker end to the war. The proclimation provided the legal framework for the emancipation of nearly all the slaves as the Union army gained control of the confederacy.

I feel that Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation at the right time because it would encourage the slaves to turn against some of their owners and fight for the Union.

i feel like lincoln made the best decision on the timing. i feel like if he would of done it any sooner or later things would of fallen in place like they did. i think this really helped with the war because when it freed the slaves they then had that many more men who were able and capable of being able to be in the army. this document brought several good things and in some cases bad things depending on the side one thinks on. the union was for this and the south wasnt because the south used the slaves to do their manual labor and with them outlawing slavery, they had to begin to do the work on their own.

The Emancipation Proclamation seems to have been timed very well. It was declared in a very critical point in the war, because the South was beginning to negotiate treaties with the North. Lincoln seemed to understand that if the treaties were established, everything would have gone back to the way it was before the war, which would include slavery. Even though it extended the war and really, truly did not free any slaves, it was a statement for how things would be from then on out.

The Emancipation proclamation was a very important order that played a big part in the Civil War. The timing of the order was good to me because it helped Lincoln gather support for the war from the north. Yes,I do believe the president made the right decision, because Lincoln needed support from the north and the proclamation also weakened European support for the Confederacy. It brought the war to an end sooner, and it began the process or ending slavery in the U.S.

I think that Lincoln chose to issue the emancipation proclamation at just the right time. Lincoln waited until the Union had won a major battle before he issued the proclamation. This was also a good time because the border states didn't join the confederacy over the slave issue. Since the border states allowed slavery Lincoln made a good choice not to bring up the issue until later into the war. Lincoln new that if the border states joined the confederacy then the Union would defiantly lose. Since he did issue the emancipation this encouraged more people in the Union to go out and fight.

Lincoln chose the right time to issue the emancipation proclamation. It caused many african americans to volunterally fight for the Union after they were realeased by slave owners. His strategy worked because the Union was finally on top in the Civil War. Lincoln made the right decision to do this now instead of before or after.

I think that the timing of the emancipation proclamation was good because if he would have done it sooner then the border states may have left the union. If the border states would have left it would have left the union a lot weaker to fight the war and they may have lost. Yes he did make the right decision because it freed the slaves in the south so the south lost one of their main ways of making money with there crops. The immediate effect it had on the war was the union soldiers got pumped to go and fight in the war and win, and that's a long term effect to because the union then won the war and completely ended slavery
